Finding a well-regarded local restaurant, hair stylist, dry cleaner — you name it — takes little more than a simple web search and a quick scroll through reviews and ratings. With 97 percent of U.S. online consumers relying on the internet to shop locally and with customers offering their peers unsolicited business reviews all the time, it’s more important than ever for small businesses to engage with customers on social media and to create a website to shape and grow their online presences. In this infographic, we look at how small businesses are working with the web. Click the infographic for a larger view.

Hey, to the myopic Guys
One thing that really bugs me… You say that “as of Spring 2011″. Well, in 50% of the world, it is Spring now… so, does Spring mean now? or 6 months ago?
Please remember that there are other significant markets int he world too
Put a month down instead

Thanks for the suggestion, Doug. We write mainly for an American audience on this blog. Hopefully you are still able to find value in our posts.

During market research for Articulate MediaWorks, a social media strategy and training business, I analyzed 140 small businesses (mostly retail shops and restaurants) in Chestnut Hill, an affluent neighborhood in Philadelphia – The State of Social Media In Chestnut Hill, PA. What I found mirrors your Infographic in many ways:
52% had a website only.
40% of business owners in Chestnut Hill use a social network on their website.
12% use more than 1 social network.
15.5% of business owners have no digital presence (or website can’t be found using Google search).
22% have a Facebook account, (only 1 business had a Facebook landing page).
9% used Twitter
At 27%, restaurants of Chestnut Hill significantly under-index in their use of social media.
The more social networks they use, the more likely they are kept up-to-date
Time and knowledge of how to use social media were the main resistance points I discovered during a “boots on the ground tour or the neighborhood.
Thank you for sharing the Infographic!

Hi there,
I’m a little confused. On the upper left you say that 65% of small businesses had a website in Spring 2011 (no source quoted), however on the upper right under Behind on Analytics, it says that 15% of small businesses don’t have a website (which is also inconcsistent with the 16% and 11% numbers also quoted in that section).
Can you clarify the discrepancies?
