Barley Labs of Durham, N.C., manufactures all-natural dog treats made from barley that’s recycled after it’s used to brew beer. The business began when a home brewer adopted Barley, a Labrador retriever mix, and began crafting pet treats that incorporated his hobby.
GoldieBlox of Oakland, Calif., was created by a female engineer who wanted to do more than color building blocks pink to nurture a love of engineering in young girls. She created a toy that combines construction and reading with a strong main character.
The Locally Laid Egg Co. of Duluth, Minn., raises its hens in pastures to produce tastier eggs while being a good steward of the planet. All the eggs are sold within a few hundred miles of the farm; every time a delivery is made, the company plants a tree.
POOP Natural Dairy Compost, located in Nampa, Idaho, sells odorless manure for lawns and gardens. The company takes the byproduct from Holstein dairy cows and puts it through a process that renders the all-natural fertilizer clean and odorless. It’s sold in 50-pound bags.
