In return for helping others go green in their businesses, Rhonda Bantom is being rewarded with some green of her own.
Bantom’s Detroit, Michigan-based Bantom Global Industries — a contract manufacturer and supplier of alternative and renewable energy products — is the latest Love A Local Business winner. Intuit will award Bantom a $25,000 hiring grant.
“I’m speechless,” said Bantom upon learning that her company would receive the grant. For a small business owner in a region economically decimated by the downturn of the automotive industry, creating jobs for a vastly skilled, educated but unemployed workforce is one of her highest priorities.
Founded in 2009, Bantom Global Industries is touted as a one-stop shop for clients looking to have their eco-friendly products manufactured, sold, delivered, and installed by one firm under one roof.
“The business came out of an idea for something that I always wanted to get involved with — recycling,” recalls Bantom, who retired from Ford Motor Company after 17 years. After returning to school for a master’s in accounting, a slew of employment opportunities out of state and abroad found their way to Bantom. But having already resolved to invest her talents and dreams back into the Detroit community, there was no leaving home.
“I turned down jobs to stay here and see this through,” Bantom remembers, noting that she had to move back home with her mother at one point to help put every dime she could muster into the fledgling venture. Ultimately, the sacrifices would pay off — both for Bantom’s company and her community.
Putting Detroit Back to Work
“It isn’t just about me anymore,” she says. “We are projecting to bring over 42 jobs to the area by 2012-2013.”
Consequently, Bantom doesn’t have to give much thought to how she will put the $25,000 hiring grant to good use.
“This will allow us to keep a high level of professionalism by hiring the right people for the right jobs as we grow,” she reveals. “I’m very excited about that. The more individuals I can bring on to make this a smooth transition, the better it will be.”
“I’m very excited about putting individuals back to work.”
