You’re looking to hire a few talented professionals who will help you take your small business to the next level. But you’re having a tough time recruiting qualified candidates in today’s overcrowded job market.
You aren’t alone: Six out of 10 small-business employers are struggling to find workers who fulfill their company’s needs, FoxBusiness.com reports.
Fortunately, there are some tried-and-true ways to scout out top talent. Here are five tips for getting the cream of the crop.
1. Sponsor a workshop for industry professionals. Hosting a seminar for people who are thriving in your niche is an effective way to attract top talent, notes Josh Howarth, regional vice president of staffing firm Robert Half International, in the Washington Post. Here’s why: It gives you an opportunity to see potential hires in action. Target young professionals by providing skills-building sessions or mid-career experts with workshops featuring more complex material.
2. Get social on LinkedIn. LinkedIn, which has an active user base of more than 200 million professionals, can be an excellent resource for hiring managers at small businesses. You can view resumes, read recommendations, interact with potential hires and sift through the slush pile with ease. LinkedIn also allows small businesses to have more visibility to potential talent.
3. Participate in job fairs. With some careful planning, job fairs can be another effective means of finding top talent. For example, look for local job fairs in which many large corporations participate, because big-name employers are likely to draw a larger number of job seekers than a smaller event. During the fair, talk one-on-one with interested parties and peruse their resumes. Set up interviews back at the office with your top picks to discuss the position in-depth and determine whether they’re the right fit for your business.
4. Offer internships to college students. Establishing a college internship program enables you to identify top talent early — and help cultivate a few careers that are bound to flourish. Think: A college student who’s still learning can be molded into an ideal match for your business. If you are willing to put in the extra work to fully train the intern, you could earn yourself a very loyal and highly equipped young employee.
5. Attend industry conferences. Industry conferences not only can be highly informative, but also give you a chance to network with new and established professionals. When deciding which events to attend, consider how many people are expected to participate, what the format of the conference is, and how you plan to draw attention to your business. Consider setting up a trade booth or offering yourself as an expert speaker.
